Territorial and border issues


The Republic of Tajikistan is a mountainous country in the Central Asian region with more than eight million population and 93% of its territories are mountainous. This mountains are one of the greatest ridges. The lowest spot of the country is on the height of 300 meters and the highest spot is on the height of 7495 meters above sea level.

Geographically, Tajikistan is clearly divided into three zones: located on South-West part of the country Khatlon Region; the Badakhshan mountainous autonomous region, also including Pamir highland is on the East part of the country, and Sogd region in the Northern part of the country. On the Northern part of Tajikistan situated Farghona valley; on the North-West and the central part - Turkiston, Zarafshon, Hissor and Alai ridges; on the South-East - Pamir (one of the highest spot of the Earth - peak Somoni, with the height of 7495 meters); low South-West part - Vakhsh and Hissor valleys.

The total length of the State border of the Republic of Tajikistan is 4159,6 km. Hereof the land border is 2900,3 km, river border is 1240,3 km, lake border is 19 km and enclave is 94,2 km.

The Republic of Tajikistan borders with the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, the People Republic of China, Kyrgyz Republic and the Republic of Uzbekistan and cooperates with each of them in border issues.

The National strategy of border management and the Plan for its implementation, which was approved by the decree of the Government of Republic of Tajikistan under №202 dated 29 April 2010 serves as a main mechanism of border safeguarding, increasing economic and trade level of the country through the development of State border management, including protection of the rights and interests of citizens in the State border line area.

The other sphere of action that proceeds from the international legal acts, which was recognized by Tajikistan, is anti-personnel mine clearance in the State border line area of Tajikistan with neighbor countries.

With the view of receiving and distribution of technical and intellectual aid in the border field, the Republic of Tajikistan is closely cooperating with the Russian Federation, the United States of America, European Union countries and etc., as well as international organizations, such as United Nations Development Program, Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and others.

A great number of programmes and projects, such as the EU Border Management Programme in Central Asia (BOMCA), XAC/K22 Project “Countering the trafficking of Afghan opiates via the northern route by enhancing the capacity of key border crossing points and through the establishment of Border Liaison Offices”, the Project for Border Management in Northern Afghanistan (BOMNAF) and others, are being implemented in the field of border management in Tajikistan.
