The mountains are Tajikistan's biggest and most important attraction. Almost the entire territory of Tajikistan is occupied by mountains. As much as 93% of it. On the geographical map, the country stands out with its dark brown colours - the colours of the mountains. The mountains of Tajikistan impress with their majesty, richness and uniqueness of the flora and fauna. Overhead peaks, blue glaciers and protected areas lure alpinists and tourists from all corners of the globe.
The mountains of Tajikistan provide huge opportunities for tourists who love ecotourism - outdoor activities in the wilderness. As it is known, ecotourism is becoming increasingly popular and attracts more and more lovers of active recreation. It involves long walks and admiring the beauties of nature, which recharges a person with positive energy.
In 2017, a separate authorised agency in the field of tourism, the Tourism Development Committee under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, was established to further develop the tourism industry, effectively use existing opportunities, develop tourism infrastructure, improve the quality of services, and attract additional investment in this area.
In 2018, the Tourism Development Strategy of the Republic of Tajikistan until 2030 was adopted. The Tourism Development Strategy, as the main industry development document, defines the goals, objectives and priorities for tourism development in the country until 2030 and plays an important role as an element in the development of plans and directions for citizens' business initiatives in the tourism sector.
At the initiative of the Founder of Peace and National Unity, the Leader of the Nation, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, H.E. Emomali Rahmon, the year 2018 has been declared "The Year of Tourism and Folk Crafts Development", and 2019-2021 years - "The Years of Rural Development, Tourism and Handicrafts".
There are about 140 local travel companies in the country providing travel services internationally.
