Cooperation between the Republic of Tajikistan and the Council of Europe

The Council of Europe is an international organization that promotes cooperation between its members and European countries in the field of legal norms, human rights, the development of democracy, the rule of law and cultural communication. The Council of Europe is not part of the European Union system, it is essentially an independent organization.

The Council of Europe is one of the oldest European organizations, founded in 1949. Currently, 47 countries of the world are members of this organization.

The Council of Europe cooperates with all countries of the world, including the countries of the Central Asian region, at the regional and bilateral levels. Tajikistan is a member of the partnership programs of the Council. The Council has established cooperation with the countries of the Central Asian region through its advisory body - the European Commission
 for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission) at the Council of Europe.

Tajikistan is interested in expanding multifaceted cooperation with the Council of Europe, and the President of the Republic of Tajikistan is the first head of state from Central Asia to visit the Council of Europe.

On June 6, 2011, President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon during his working visit to Strasbourg met with then Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorburn Youngland.

As a result of the meeting, the European Convention on the Mutual Recognition of Qualifications Related to Higher Education was signed.

A joint statement of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Council of Europe was also announced, in which the directions for further development of relations between the two parties were identified and specified.
