Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and the Arab Republic of Egypt were established on April 1, 1993. Egypt recognized the independence of the Republic of Tajikistan on January 1, 1992.
The first high-level meeting between the heads of two states - the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon and the President of the Arab Republic of Egypt Hosni Mubarak was held in December 1994 in the margins of the 7th Summit of Heads of State of the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation (former Organization of the Islamic Conference) in Dorulbaizo of the Kingdom of Morocco.
On February 4, 2007 the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon paid an official visit to the Arab Republic of Egypt. During the conversation, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan stressed the importance of developing friendly relations between the two countries, in particular, said: "Strengthening and expanding friendly relations with the Arab Republic of Egypt, which is one of the cradles of human civilization and at the same time one of the most influential Arab countries and the Islamic world, is an important area of regional and international policy of the Republic of Tajikistan.". Six documents were signed during this official visit.
The official visit of the President of Tajikistan to Egypt in 2007 marked a qualitatively new stage of cooperation. In order to implement the signed agreements, a Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Economic, Technical and Scientific Cooperation between the two countries was established. The first meeting of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission was held on January 23-27, 2009 in Dushanbe.
In 2017, two fruitful meetings were held between the Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon and President of the Arab Republic of Egypt Abdulfattah al-Sisi: one on May 20 in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) on the eve of the Summit of Arab and Muslim States and the other meeting on September 5, in Xiamen (China) in the framework of the Dialogue of Developing Countries and BRICS countries.
On October 3, 2019 in Cairo was held a regular round of political consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Arab Republic of Egypt under the leadership of the First Deputy MFA of Tajikistan Khusrav Noziri and Deputy MFA Of Egypt Hani Salim. The political consultations stressed the mutual readiness and mutual interest in further development of friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries in all areas.
On March 9-11, 2022, the Founder of Peace and National Unity - Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon paid an official visit to the Arab Republic of Egypt. The meeting of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon and the President of the Arab Republic of Egypt Abdulfattah al-Sisi began with the consideration of various issues of Tajikistan and Egypt and continued during the extensive talks with the official delegations of the two countries. Five documents were signed during the official visit.
On March 10 in Cairo the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon also met with the Prime Minister of the Arab Republic of Egypt Dr. Mustafa Madbuli and took part with him in the opening part of the Tajik-Egyptian Business Forum. Based on the results of the work of the Tajik-Egyptian Business Association, 11 new cooperation documents have been signed.
President of the Republic of Tajikistan in the framework of his official visit also visited Cairo University and delivered a speech for teachers and students. President Emomali Rahmon awarded "Honorary Doctor" of Cairo University for the valuable contribution to the strengthening of friendly relations between Tajikistan and Egypt, the development of scientific, security, humanitarian and cultural ties, and especially global initiatives in the field of water and climate.
There are many priority areas of cooperation between Tajikistan and Egypt and many untapped opportunities, including the production of medicines, rehabilitation and construction of irrigation networks, construction of joint ventures conducting geological exploration and development of mineral deposits, fruit and vegetable processing, increase cotton production and its processing and on this basis the establishment of textile enterprises, leather processing, development of the food industry, tourism, staff training etc.
