Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and the Republic of Iraq were formally established on November 30, 1995. Iraq recognized the independence of the Republic of Tajikistan on January 11, 1992.
Since October 19, 2018, Zubaydullo Zubaydzoda has served as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan to the Republic of Iraq, with residence in Kuwait.
The International Symposium entitled “The Legacy of Abu Hanifa and Its Significance in the Dialogue of Civilizations” (October 2009) was attended by Ahmad Hasanat-Taha, Imam of the Baghdad Grand Mosque.

With the direct support of the leaders of both countries, on April 30, 2019, 84 Tajik children were evacuated from Baghdad to Dushanbe by a special flight.
On 8–9 November 2025, the Secretary of the Security Council of the Republic of Tajikistan paid a working visit to the Republic of Iraq. During the visit, meetings were held with the country’s leadership and senior officials to discuss bilateral and multilateral cooperation. In addition to strengthening collaboration in the political, security, and economic spheres, as well as in combating terrorism and crime, the matter of repatriating citizens of the Republic of Tajikistan to their homeland was also addressed.
