On 31 May, 2025, on the margins of the International Conference on Glaciers’ Preservation - 2025 there was held a Thematic Session entitled “Pact for the Future: How the Pact Can Inform Glacier Preservation”.
The session which was co-chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan Sirojiddin Muhriddin and Executive Secretary, United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana focused on the importance of integrating glaciers preservation issue in the main multilateral frameworks, particularly the Pact for the Future.
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan highlighting the importance of the issue under discussion, stated that the Pact for the Future is not only a political commitment, but a moral one: to place the needs of future generations above short-term interests.
S. Muhriddin also emphasized that glacier loss and water related disasters are not the challenges of tomorrow, but the issues of today. And they will only be solved through global solidarity, sustained dialog, and science-based action.
Other high-level participants, such as Retno Marsudi, United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Water, Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, Executive Secretary, United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), H.E. Meder Mashiev, Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Technical Supervision, the Kyrgyz Republic and others also addressed the meeting.
