Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and Kingdom of Spain were established on August 4th 1992.
The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan to the Kingdom of Spain is Jamshed Khamidov (with residence in Geneve, Switzerland) (since 5 April 2018).
The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Spain to the Republic of Tajikistan is Jorge Urbiola Lopez de Montenegro (with residence in Nur-Sultan) (since 20 November 2021).
In 2007 during the Chairmanship of Spain in OSCE the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Spain Migel Angel Moratinos paid a visit to Tajikistan and met with the President of the country and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan.
On July 18th, 2010 the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Spain Migel Moratinos visited Tajikistan and met with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan Hamrokhon Zarifi. As the result of the meeting the Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Spain was signed.
On December 1, 2010, the Third Vice President of the Government, Mr. Manuel Chávez, met with the President of Tajikistan, Mr. Emomali Rahmon in the framework of the OSCE Summit in Astana.
Spain uses an annually renewable overflight agreement that covers all State aircraft, and which is very useful for its operations in Afghanistan. From October 2009 until 2018, Spain has been using the French military base of Dushanbe to offer logistical support to the Spanish forces in Afghanistan, within the framework of the ISAF operation. The use of the aforementioned base has been possible thanks to an agreement between NATO and Tajikistan.
The amount of bilateral trade turnover between the Republic of Tajikistan and Spain for 9 months of 2020 the total amount reached 3328,7 USD (only import).
In 2010, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Spain and Tajikistan signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of both countries.
