India was one of the firststate to recognize the independence of the Republic of Tajikistan.
Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and the Republic of India were established in 1992. The Embassy of the Republic of Tajikistan in New Delhi was opened in 2003.
The first Indian Ambassador to the Republic of Tajikistan with the residence in Tehran was accredited in 1993. The Embassy of the Republic of India in Dushanbe is functioning since May, 1994. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Republic of India to the Republic of Tajikistan is Asith Kumar Bhattacharjee.
Since the establishment of diplomatic relationsthe President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon has paid 3 official (1993, 1995 and 2001) and 2 state visits (2006 and 2012) to the Republic of India. These significant events played an important role in strengthening bilateral relations between both countries.
The first official visit of the President of the Republic of India Pratibha Devisingh Patil took place in September, 2009, opening a new chapter in the relations between both countries.
Since 1992 more than 50 agreements, memoranda of understanding and other official documents between the two countries were signed.
Trade and economic relations between both countries got a new impulse for development in 2013. In 2011, the trade turnover between the two countries averaged at 26 million 858, 3 thousand U.S. dollars. In 2012, increased to 27 million 562,0 thousand US dollars. In the first 8 months of 2013 the trade turnover between the two countries reached 29 million 842, 7 thousand U.S. dollars, of which export is 45,4 thousand and imports is 29 million. 797,4 thousand U.S. dollars.
National Air Carrier Company of Tajikistan «Tajik Air» started the direct flights from Dushanbe to Delhi in 2013.
Tajikistan and India are closely cooperating in a cultural and humanitarian field. Indian Council for cultural relations /ICCR/ in Delhi is annually offering scholarships for Tajikistan students for MA and PhD degrees. At the same time under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation /ITEC Program/ the Government of India annually provides 150 scholarships for government officials of Tajikistan.
