The Republic of Tajikistan and the Republic of India established diplomatic relations on August 28, 1992.
The legal base of the bilateral relations between two countries includes 70 inter-governmental and inter-departmental agreements, of these: 4 are inter-state agreements; 26 inter-governmental agreements; 15 inter-departmental agreements; 7 joint declarations; and 10 various programs and protocols.
Bilateral treaties have been signed by the two countries in the sphere of politics, economy, social, culture, military, security, education and science, industry, energy, youth affairs, healthcare, investment, use of outer space and other important sectors.
On February 1993 the visit of the high-level delegation of the Government of Republic of Tajikistan to the Republic of India laid the foundation for the development of relations between the two countries. During this visit, the Declaration on means and areas of cooperation between the Republic of Tajikistan and the Republic of India was signed, which emphasized the principles of respect for independence, sovereign equality, territorial integrity, non-interference in the internal affairs of the state and observance of the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.
The first official visit of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan to India was held on December 1995 and during his visit, five bilateral agreements were signed.
The second visit of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan took place on December 1995, while returning to Tajikistan from Vietnam. During the visit, the President met with the Prime Minister of India and discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations and regional and international issues.
At the invitation of the President of India on May 9-12, 2001, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan paid an official visit to the Republic of India. During his visit, he met with the President of India Kocheril Raman Narayanan, Vice President Krishna Kant and Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. During this visit, 6 agreements in various spheres have been signed.
On November 13-14 2003 Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee paid an official visit to the Republic of Tajikistan. During the meetings, the sides discussed ways to expand bilateral relations and mutually beneficial cooperation, regional and international issues, as well as other issues of mutual benefits. During the visit 8 agreements were signed and a garden and a bust of Mahatma Gandhi were opened in Dushanbe.
On August 6-10 2006 at the invitation of the Prime Minister of India Dr.Manmohan Singh, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan paid an official visit to the Republic of India. During the meeting, a joint declaration was adopted which states the will of both countries to open new prospects in the field of bilateral cooperation. Four agreements were signed during this visit.
On September 6-8 2009, at the invitation of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, the President of the Republic of India Pratibha Devisingh Patil paid an official visit to the Republic of Tajikistan.
On September 1-4 2012 at the President of India’s invitation, the Leader of Nation – President of Tajikistan paid a state visit to India. During the visit the meetings of the President of Tajikistan with the Prime Minister, Vice President and President took place. Nine bilateral agreements were signed and the Leader of Nation, President of Republic of Tajikistan met with a group of India entrepreneurs.
On April 14-17 2013 the official visit of the Vice President of India, Shri Mohammad Hamid Ansari to the Republic of Tajikistan took place. During his meeting with President of Republic of Tajikistan, the issues of multifaceted cooperation, strengthening of political, security, economic, trade and investment ties and cooperation in the field of science and technology, education, healthcare and culture between Tajikistan and India were discussed.
The state visit of current Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Tajikistan took place on July 12-13, 2015, and gave new enticement to strengthening of bilateral cooperation. On July 13, 2015 a monument of Rabindranath Tagore was opened with the participation of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
On December 16-17 2016 at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi the state visit of President Emomali Rahmon took place.
On October 2018 the state visit of President Ram Nath Kovind to the Republic of Tajikistan took place and 10 agreements were signed during this visit.
