Bilateral Relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and Hungary
Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and Hungary were established in July 2, 1992.
Since January 2004 Embassy of Tajikistan to Hungary (with residence in Vienna) has been accredited.
Embassy of Hungary to Tajikistan (with residence in Astana) has been also accredited.
The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Hungary to the Republic of Tajikistan (with residence in Astana) is Mr. Otto Ivan Rona.
Political cooperation and exchange of visits
The political relations of the Republic of Tajikistan with Hungary are based on friendship and mutual understanding. Bilateral relations have been developing since independence. Political contacts between the Republic of Tajikistan and Hungary continue at various levels. In February 2004, the First Deputy Minister, State Secretary for Political Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary - A. Barshon came to the Republic of Tajikistan on an official visit. During this visit, he met with the President of the Republic of Tajikistan - Emomali Rahmon and other officials of the country.
On January 17, 2011, the first political consultations between the Republic of Tajikistan and Hungary were held in Dushanbe.
The official visit of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan – H.E. Mr. Emomali Rahmon to Hungary on June 10, 2011 gave a new impetus to the relations between the two countries. During the visit, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan held a meeting with the President of Hungary - Mr. Pal Schmitt.
On February 25, 2016 in New York, the working meeting of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sirojidin Muhriddin, was held with the members of the Steering Committee of the "Friends of the Water" Group, including with the Deputy Secretary of State of Hungary for International Cooperation, Adam Zoltan.
On November 29, 2016, in Budapest, on the sidelines of the Budapest Water Summit-2016, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, the Honorable Leader of the Nation, Emomali Rahmon, had a fruitful meeting with the President of Hungary, Mr. Janos Ader, regarding the current situation and prospects for the development of relations between the two countries.
On June 27-28, 2017, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary Mr. Peter Szijjarto visited the Republic of Tajikistan on an official visit.
On June 20-22, 2018, the Hungarian delegation led by the Ambassador for Special Tasks Mr. Istvan Yo visited the Republic of Tajikistan to participate in the International High-Level Conference on the International Decade of Action "Water for Sustainable Development, 2018-2028".
On November 28, 2018, the meeting of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan, Mr. Sirojiddin Muhriddin, with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, Mr. Peter Szijjarto, was held in Geneva on the sidelines of the Geneva Conference on Afghanistan.
On September 26, 2019, on the sidelines of the 74th session of the UN General Assembly, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Sirojiddin Muhriddin, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, Mr. Peter Szijjarto.
On April 30, 2024, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan, Mr. Sirojiddin Muhriddin, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, Mr. Peter Szijjarto. During the conversation, the parties discussed important bilateral, regional and cooperation issues in multilateral formats.
The interlocutors assessed the role of the existing tools of bilateral relations, including the joint intergovernmental commission of Tajikistan and Hungary on economic cooperation and political consultations between the ministries of foreign affairs, in expanding and strengthening multifaceted cooperation between the two countries.
During the meeting, special attention was paid to issues of regional security and the fight against modern threats. The cooperation of both countries within the framework of the European Union was also considered among the topics that were discussed during the negotiations.
So far, two meetings of the Joint Commission of Tajikistan and Hungary on economic cooperation have been held (2021 – in Dushanbe and 2022 in in Budapest).
The contractual-legal basis of bilateral cooperation between the two states includes 17 documents and covers the fields of trade and economy, agriculture, healthcare, investment, education, science, culture, water resources management, extradition, transportation of convicts, expansion of cooperation between the ministries of foreign affairs.
In December 2021, Hungary delivered 50,000 Astrazeneca vaccines to Tajikistan as humanitarian aid.
