First celebration of the World Football Day at the UN

On May 22, 2024, at the UN Headquarters, the member states celebrated the first World Football Day, the initiative which was proposed by the President of the Central Asian Football Association (CAFA) H.E. Rustam Emomali, and adopted through UN General Assembly Resolution No. A/RES/78/281. This historic event was organized by the Permanent missions of Tajikistan, Bahrain, and Libya to the UN as are main co-sponsors of the resolution.

The event was opened by the Permanent Representative of Tajikistan to the United Nations, Mr. Jonibek Hikmat.

Mr. J. Hikmat urged UN member states to harness the power of football to unite, inspire, invest in the sport's potential and infrastructure, ensure broad access of the population, support coaches on the field, and train future stars.

Following the official part of the event, a mini-football tournament was held at the UN headquarters, with the participation of four groups representing Asia, Latin America, Europe, and Africa. The opening ceremony of a mini-football tournament was inaugurated by the President of UNGA Mr. Dennis Francis.
