Diplomatic relations between Tajikistan and Romania were established on 7 July 1992. The Embassy of Romania was established in Tajikistan with headquarters in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan. Currently, the Ambassador of Romania to Tajikistan (with headquarters in Astana) is Mrs. Madalina Lupu.
It is worth noting that for the first time on September 18, 2018, with the Decree of the Founder of National Peace and Unity - the Leader of the Nation, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, H.E. Mr. Emomali Rahmon, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan to the Republic of Austria, Idibek Kalandar, was appointed as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan to Romania (with headquarters in Vienna).
The Government of Romania, within the framework of its presidency in the Council of the European Union (April 15-16, 2019), hosted a high-level conference dedicated to the new European Union Strategy for Central Asia and entitled "Agenda 2030: Partnership for Sustainable Development", where the delegation of the Republic of Tajikistan under the leadership of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the country Mr. Sirojiddin Muhriddin participated. On the sidelines of this conference, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan to Romania Idibek Kalandar spoke about the impact of the consequences of climate change on the ecological situation in the Central Asian region, including the increase in natural disasters related to water, the rapid melting of glaciers and the reduction of their area, as well as the negative effects of this process on economic and social development in Tajikistan and the region.
