Relations of Tajikistan with Afghanistan

Diplomatic relations between Tajikistan and Afghanistan were established on July15, 1992.

The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan to the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan is Sharifi Saadi since 28 September 2020.

The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to the Republic of Tajikistan Mohammad Zahir Agbar since 28 January 2020.

The Embassy of the Republic of Tajikistan in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan was officially opened in 2001. 

On 13 July 1992, the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan was opened in Dushanbe.

Throughout 28 years of relations within the framework of the implementation of the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Good Neighbourliness between the Republic of Tajikistan and the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, the presidents of the two countries met in Tajikistan in 1996, 2001, 2006, 2013 and 2016 and in Afghanistan in 1993, 1995, 2010 and 2014 in the course of which they considered a wide range of issues of interest, including policy, trade and economy, water and energy, industry, culture, health care, as well as stabilization of the situation on the border and resolution of internal conflicts in Afghanistan.

The Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Economic, Trade, Social and Technical Cooperation as well as political consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs play an important role in the development of multilateral relations between the two countries. Until today, seven meetings of the Joint Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation and two meetings of political consultations have been held between the Republic of Tajikistan and the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.

Trade and economic relations between Tajikistan and Afghanistan tend to develop. Today Afghanistan occupies an important place among the trading partners of Tajikistan.

In 2019, the trade turnover between the countries amounted to 106 million dollars. It mainly includes electricity, cement, cotton fiber, building materials, mineral fertilizers, food, fruits and vegetables.

In cooperation between Tajikistan and Afghanistan, energy and infrastructure are priorities.

More than 500 Afghan citizens are studying in the Republic of Tajikistan.

Year after year, the regulatory and legal framework of bilateral relations between Tajikistan and Afghanistan is being strengthened. To date, more than 90 bilateral cooperation documents have been signed in various fields.
